Barry Allen Tanhoff was born on December 12, 1943, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Archie and Mable (Behm) Tanhoff. He attended school in Granite Falls before enlisting in the United States Army, where he served honorably and was discharged in February 1970. In the early 1970's Barry started a construction company with his brother, Bruce. They recycled cars, restored bridges, did various types of excavation, and blacktopped driveways and parking lots. They also started Valley Fur Company Inc. in the 70's where they bought and sold furs.

Barry married Katheryne Nilson on December 31, 1973, in Boyd, Minnesota. They made their home in Montevideo, where they raised four children: Ryan, RoxAnne, Tari, and Tad. In the early 1980’s he embarked on a career in the pipeline industry. He became an inspector, with his wife Kaye alongside as his Office Manager, on many pipeline projects throughout the United States.

Barry had a passion for outdoors, enjoying activities such as hunting, fishing, and trapping. He was a dedicated member of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, and the American Legion. In addition to his outdoor pursuits, Barry enjoyed playing cards and gardening. He also had a deep love for animals and was blessed with many faithful dogs throughout his life. One could always find him with his faithful companion – Max. Above all, Barry cherished his time spent with family, especially his grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart. Barry was always ready with a pot of coffee and seat at his table for anyone who stopped. And, in return, all he asked for was a few kind words and a smile.

Barry is survived by his children: Ryan Snyder (Kim), Shakopee, MN, RoxAnne Snyder, St. Cloud, MN, Tari Tanhoff (Kimberly), Hopkins, MN, Tad Tanhoff (Kami), Montevideo, MN; his faithful dog, Max; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews along with numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Katheryne; his parents, Archie and Mabel; mother-in-law, Helen Johnson; siblings: Bob Tanhoff, Dorothy Eliason, Artie Jane Early, Rosemary Tanhoff, and Bruce Tanhoff; and in-laws: Jerry Nilson, Jan Nilson, Gayle Nilson, Stan Wilkes.
