Betty Jo Vogtsberger was born on December 12, 1937, to Arnold and Elizabeth (Schoenoff) Vogtsberger. Betty Jo grew up in Menomonie, Wisconsin, with her three siblings, Jim, Mary, and Rich. She had an amazing childhood filled with many memories at her home church, where she committed her life to the Lord at a young age. It was also there that her mother served as the church organist and Betty Jo became involved in the choir, where her musical gifts blossomed.
She later met her future husband, Cyrus “Cy” Solberg, at the same church where he was serving as an intern. Cy was impressed by her ability to throw a softball, her musical talent, and most importantly, her deep understanding of the gospel and God’s love for His people. They were united in marriage on June 30, 1956, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Menomonie. Their union was blessed with four beautiful children: Mark, John, Ruth, and Sarah. That blessing continued into the next two generations with 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Over the years, Betty Jo and Pastor Cy lived in many communities where Pastor Cy faithfully served as a pastor and Betty Jo was actively involved in nearly every aspect of church life. Together they made their homes in Astoria, Kenneth, Dawson, Tyler, and Elbow Lake. After Pastor Cy retired from his call in Elbow Lake, they moved back to Tyler, Minnesota where they continued their ministry in a variety of faith communities.
Betty Jo centered her life around the church and deeply cherished the many church families she was blessed to be part of throughout the years. Anyone who met Betty Jo was immediately drawn in by her warmth and joy. She had an infectious spirit and a special ability to make everyone feel like family.
Betty Jo was athletic, competitive, and known for her wonderful sense of humor — qualities that continue to live on through her family. Her competitive spirit could be seen in many areas of life. Betty Jo loved competitions with family and friends in ping pong, golf, and cards. She was always an active member of the community and deeply involved in the lives of those she loved. Betty Jo also found great joy in caring for her flowers and took pride in maintaining a beautiful lawn and welcoming home.
Sports were not the only passion she shared with others. Betty Jo also had a lifelong love of music. She taught piano lessons for many years, faithfully played the organ for Sunday services, and served as the choir director at church for many years, sharing her musical gifts with countless others along the way.
Betty Jo and Pastor Cy also began a cherished family tradition of annual summer trips to Little Norway (Camp Lloyd) and Itasca State Park, a place that held special meaning from the very beginning of their marriage after honeymooning there together. Over the years, the tradition continued to grow as children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren gathered each summer to make lifelong memories together. While at Itasca, they also faithfully served in ministry at the Cathedral of the Pines. The annual trips became a treasured part of family life, and their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren hold many fond memories of their time together there.
Most of all, Betty Jo’s greatest joy was her family. Her love, encouragement, and steadfast support will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Betty Jo is survived by her sons, Mark (Kelly) Solberg of Cambridge, Minnesota, and John (Lori) Solberg of Mitchell, South Dakota; daughters, Ruth (Jim) Rupp of Ruthton, Minnesota, and Sarah (Paul) Libbon of Duluth, Minnesota; grandchildren, Matt (Sarah), Sam (Jojo), Nick (Saskia), John, Ryan, and Megan Solberg, Laisa (Jimmy) Dekker, Brennen (Madison) Rupp, Elizabeth (Timothy) Wendel, and Annalise (Joshua) Helling; great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Jordan Dekker, Madden Rupp, Mary and Marta Solberg, Elise Wendel, Ashley and Summer Solberg, Everett and Lucas Solberg, and baby boy Wendel expected in 2026; along with many beloved family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Pastor Cy.
