Ernest Nylen passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at the MN Veterans Home in Montevideo at the age of 98.
The family are arranging a private burial at the Veteran’s Cemetery at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Arrangements are with Anderson - TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo.
Ernest Robert Nylen was born January 11, 1927 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He grew up in the Minneapolis area, graduating from Miller Vocational High School and the Minnesota School of Business. Ernest served in the United States Navy from 1945-1946 during WW2. He married Phyllis Mary Hanna (Darling) on January 22, 1948 in Minneapolis, and together they raised 8 children before divorcing in 1980. Ernie was a Teamster truck driver for over 40 years, driving for Franklin Creamery, and the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and playing cards in his spare time. After retirement Ernie lived in Florida and Arizona, before returning to Minnesota.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel Viola Nylen (Nelson) and David Edward Nylen of Benson, Minnesota, by his son, David Nylen, and grandsons, Erik Nylen and Jordan Jelinek. Ernest is survived by his children, James Nylen (Ginny), Phyllis Wendel, Daniel Nylen (Karen), John Nylen, Mary Vath (Myron), Suzanne Jarnberg (Steve), and Thomas Nylen. Ernest is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Ernie will be missed by family and friends. The family are arranging a private burial at the Veteran’s Cemetery at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
