George Modderman

George Modderman of Montevideo died on Thursday, July 24, 2025 at Luther Haven Nursing Home at the age of 87.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at Hope Reformed Church in Montevideo. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be from 5-7PM on Friday, August 1, 2025 at Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service at 6:45PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.

George Alden Modderman was born January 14, 1938 in Milo Township, Mille Lacs Co. Pease, MN to Helmer and Rose (Van Dalen) Modderman. He graduated from Clara City High School in 1955. On July 8, 1960 he married Verla Hoekstra at the Roseland Reformed Church. They were the parents of 3 children, Michael, Deborah, and Kathryn. George served in the Army Reserves from 1961 until 1966. George worked at the Renville Coop Oil Co. and managed the Danube Coop Oil Co. in the late 1960's. In October 1969, they moved to Montevideo, MN and they managed and owned Monte Firestone for 30 years. He retired in July 1999.

George and Verla became seasonal campers at Wildridge RV resort near Alexandria, MN from 1982-2021. After retirement in 1999 they became “snowbirds” at Winterset RV Resort near Palmetto, FL until 2024.

George enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in their sports activities, fishing, camping, word puzzles and playing games on his Kindle. He served as an Elder and Deacon at Hope Reformed Church.

George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Verla; children: Mike (Pam) Modderman of Fergus Falls, Deb Wagner of Delano, Kathy (James) Kloeckner of Fairmont; six grandchildren: Nick Modderman, Montevideo, Tyler (Chryseis) Modderman, Fergus Falls, Cody Wagner, Delano, Jesse Wagner (Quaneisha), Delano, Ashley (Justin) Webster, Rochester, Emily (Riley) Larson, Eau Claire, WI; great-grandchildren: Ivan, MJ, Octavian, Ellea; siblings: Audrey Van Vuuren, Sioux Center, IA, Sandy Kortgard, Faribault, MN and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Helmer and Rose Modderman; in-laws, William J. and Eleanor Hoekstra; sister Gertrude Mouw; son-in-law, Robert Wagner; brothers-in-law, Marvin VanVuuren, Robert Mouw, Marloe Kortgard; sisters-in-law, Charlene Sportel, Lois Hoekstra; and nephew, Adam Hoekstra.
