Leander Mickels, of Maynard, died Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the Granite Falls Hospital at the age of 93.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Maynard Lutheran Church in Maynard with Rev. Amy Juel officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Leander Mickels was born on March 14, 1924 in Brooten, MN to Nick and Mary (Moe) Mickels. He attended country school by Brooten and then later in town until the 8th grade. He married Donna Hanen on November 22, 1952 in Watson, MN. They had four boys together, Gary, Dennis, Vernon and Ricky.
Leander and Donna farmed and milked cows. He also owned a gas station and did bailing and shipping of flax straw for Archer Daniels Company. Later he would own a bar in Clara City, The Bucket. He was also know to do custom combining. In later years he installed floor covering until age 89. He finally said it was too hard to get up off the floor, he laughed that it had nothing to do with his age.
Leander enjoyed spending time with his boys. He also spent time playing cards, pull tabs and having a beer or two with his friends at Moldys.
Leander is survived by his children: Gary ( Bonnie) Mickels of Benson, Dennis Mickels of Vilonia, AR, Vernon ( Carmen) Mickels of Bangor, WI and Ricky ( Mary) Mickels of Maynard, MN as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Donna in 2010; one brother and two sisters.
