Lowell Harry Hanson was born on October 2, 1938, in Swenoda Township, Swift County, Minnesota, he was baptized and confirmed at West Bank Lutheran Church. Lowell was the oldest of five children born to Harry and Mildred (Thompson) Hanson. He grew up on a farm south of Benson and from an early age, he embraced life with enthusiasm. He excelled in 4-H and baseball and discovered what would become a lifelong love: music.

Music was the heartbeat of Lowell’s life. He began playing piano as a child and later added trumpet and tuba, instruments that would accompany him through decades of teaching, performing, and inspiring others. He pursued his passion at Augustana College in Sioux Falls and later at Mankato State University, where he earned his music degree.

It was in the college band that Lowell met Georgia Koberoski, the love of his life—she on percussion, he on tuba. Their shared love of music blossomed into a partnership that would last a lifetime. They were married on December 30, 1960, beginning a beautiful journey together marked by devotion, laughter, and song. Lowell and Georgia’s life together took them to Outlook, MT and Jeffers, MN where he was the only music teacher at those small schools. He was the band director at Wolf Point, Montana for 9 years where the community embraced him as a teacher, musician, and friend to all. He loved the annual Wolf Point Wild Horse stampede and looked forward to it each summer. Wolf Point was a very special place where he and Georgia made lifelong friends.

They moved to Montevideo in 1973 where he became the Middle School band director and the High School Orchestra director. In 1984 he moved into the high school director position where he taught until his retirement in 2000. As Lowell followed his calling as a band director and educator, music filled their home, with Georgia also sharing her gifts as a piano teacher. Together, they raised three daughters and built a home grounded in love, learning, and creativity.

A cornerstone of the Montevideo community, Lowell’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. He helped found the Cheerful Champs 4-H Club, contributed to starting a local theater company, and was instrumental in establishing the Montevideo Community Band. He served on the Minnesota Music Education Association Board of Directors. He was a winner of the Montevideo Teacher of the Year award and received the 1995 Community Involvement Award. At Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Lowell joyfully shared his talents—directing and singing in the choir, directing youth choir, coordinating special music for Christmas and Easter services, and serving as president of the congregation.

Lowell loved spending time at the family’s cabin on Lake Minnewaska, where for 26 summers he delighted in hosting friends and family, creating memories filled with conversation, laughter, and togetherness.

After retiring from teaching, Lowell found fresh joy at Heather Nursery. Surrounded by plants, flowers, and people, he thrived—watering, landscaping, helping customers, and especially delivering flowers throughout the community, a task that perfectly reflected his generous spirit.

Lowell was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Georgia, in February of 2022.

He is survived by his daughters: Loni (Dave) Eid of Montevideo, Allison (Greg) Hutchens of Montevideo, and Melissa Hanson of Buffalo; seven treasured grandchildren: Natasha Eid; Elliot (Sarah) Eid; Madeline (Shane) Ruether; Isabelle (Andrew) Meyer; Abigail (Thaddeus) Mitlyng; Catherine Haugen (Casey Rix); and Charlie Thompson; and seven great-grandchildren: Annabella, Oliver, Porter, Lehti, Maisie, Kade, and Sienna. His-siblings Ron (Connie) Hanson, Washburn, WI, Mike (Muriel) Hanson, Edina, MN, Ken (Karen) Hanson, Benson, MN, Kay (Dean) Voorhees, Oskaloosa, IA.

Lowell will be remembered for the music he shared, the students he inspired, the community he strengthened, and the deep love he gave to his family. His life was a beautiful song - and its melody lives on in all who knew him.
