Mildred "Millie" Haugen, cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 17th, 2026, at her residence in Lewis Center, OH, at the age of 85. Born on Thursday, January 16th, 1941, in Bladenboro, NC, Millie was a beacon of warmth and kindness throughout her life.
A dedicated day care owner and operator, and foster parent, Millie devoted much of her life to nurturing and enriching the lives of children. Her passion for caring extended beyond her professional life into her personal life, where she found immense joy in the laughter and achievements of her grandchildren.
Millie was preceded in death by her beloved spouse, LeRoy H. Haugen; her parents, Sanford W. and Gussie L. Johnson; her daughter, Tracy Jo Haugen; her sister, Clariece Thompson; and brothers, Morris, Moses, Tracy, and Danny Johnson. Despite these profound losses, Millie remained a source of strength and love for those around her.
She is survived by her sons, Tim (Sheila) Haugen and Terry (Sarah) Haugen. She leaves a legacy of love in her grandchildren, Matthew (Laura) Haugen, Daniel (Cathryn) Haugen, David Haugen, Nicholas (Macy) Haugen, Samuel (Krista Estadt) Haugen, Kaitlyn Haugen, Abigail Barrientes, and Eliana Barrientes, as well as her great-granddaughter, Eva Joy Haugen. Millie's family extends to include her brothers, Marvin Johnson and James (Phyllis) Johnson; sisters, Jeanette Baxley, Mattie Lou Cash, Ruth Wilson, and Wilma (Johnny) Box. She will also be dearly missed by her two special former foster children, Shaun Lemmerhirt and Judd Gonzalez-Whelan, and her vast network of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Outside of her work, Millie had a passion for gardening, spending countless hours nurturing her vegetable and flower gardens. She enjoyed canning, baking, and the simple pleasure of the company of her grandchildren and her beloved dogs. Her compassion extended to all living creatures, evidenced by her support for the Licking County Humane Society.
Family and friends are invited to remember and celebrate Millie's life during the visitation at Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service, Kirkersville, OH, on Friday, May 22nd, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A graveside service will be held at Grace Lutheran Cemetery, Dawson, MN, on Tuesday, May 26th, 2026, at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Millie's honor to the Licking County Humane Society, a cause close to her heart, by visiting, https://lchspets.org/donate/.
The Kirkersville chapel of Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service is honored to care for Millie and her family during this time of reflection and remembrance. Her spirit of generosity, love, and resilience will continue to inspire all who knew her.
