Richard Dean Heggestad was born on August 1, 1933, in Appleton, Minnesota, the son of Sigvold and Alma Heggestad. He attended school in Appleton and grew up learning the values of hard work, faith, and family that would guide him throughout his life.
On July 23, 1955, Richard married the love of his life, Janice Glisky, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo, Minnesota. Following their marriage, Richard and Janice moved to Anderson, Alaska, where Richard worked as an oiler on a dredge. In 1961, they returned to Minnesota and settled in Appleton. The following year, they moved to Dawson, where they owned and operated the City Cash Market and Locker, serving the community for many years.
In 1985, Richard retired from the meat locker business and pursued a lifelong passion for helping others. He returned to college to further his education in counseling and was subsequently employed by Project Turnabout in Granite Falls. Through his work in addiction counseling and his dedication to Alcoholics Anonymous, Richard impacted countless lives, offering encouragement, hope, and guidance to those seeking recovery. In 1991 Richard was honored with the Irene Whitney Award for Outstanding Service in the field of Chemical Dependency Treatment, recognizing his exceptional commitment to helping individuals and families affected by addiction. Although he officially retired at age 65, his commitment to helping others led him to continue working at Project Turnabout until he was 80 years old.
Richard found great joy in life's simple pleasures. He spent countless evenings tending his garden, where he proudly grew some of the finest tomatoes around. He also enjoyed traveling to the casino with Janice and treasured the time they spent together. Above all else, Richard valued his family. Whether it meant traveling through snowstorms, bad weather, or long distances, he and Janice never hesitated to support their children and grandchildren in their activities, sporting events, performances, and accomplishments.
Richard will be remembered for his compassionate heart, unwavering faith in people, generous spirit, and dedication to helping others find a better path in life. His legacy lives on in the many individuals and families he touched through his counseling, mentorship, and love.
He is survived by his children, Mark (Darlene) Heggestad of Jacksonville, Florida; Chad (Jennifer) Heggestad of Kimball, Minnesota; Missy (Les) Streich of Kimball, Minnesota; and Jason (Charleanna) Heggestad of Granite Falls, Minnesota; grandchildren Cody Blum, Jurnee Hastings, Alex Heggestad, Sidney Heggestad, Kailee Heggestad, Fallon Cosgrove, Natasha Peterson, Chantel Heggestad, Matt Heggestad, Sofia Streich, Yvette Jones, Michael Allen, and Brianna Iverson; four great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janice, his parents, Sigvold and Alma Heggestad, and his eldest son, Scott Heggestad.
Richard's family will remember him as a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, trusted counselor, and faithful friend whose kindness and encouragement made a lasting difference in the lives of so many. His memory will be cherished, and his legacy will continue through the family he loved and the people he helped.
