Robert Donald Carlson, of Brookings, SD, formerly of Dawson, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Brookings Health System at the age of 61.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Dawson Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Herb Rotunda officiating.
Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. with the service to follow at 2 p.m. at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in the Dawson Cemetery.
Robert was born to Dorothy and James Carlson on January 20, 1963, in Dawson. He was a 1981 graduate of Dawson-Boyd High School and a member of Dawson First Presbyterian Church. Robert was a proud veteran who served in the United States Army National Guard. His time in service led to countless lifelong memories and friendships. He graduated from St. Cloud State University with a degree in Graphic Design. From 2008 until his passing, Robert worked for South Dakota State University as a print lab manager.
Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and spending time outdoors in his younger years. As he aged, he developed a distinct love for the culinary arts. He pursued certification as a master certified judge with the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) and traveled to judge and participate in competitions across the country.
Robert's free time was spent making countless memories at Skinners and Cubby's in Brookings, where he gained many good friends, frequently participating in card clubs, pool leagues, and celebrating the SDSU Jackrabbits.
Robert is survived by his siblings: Connie (Jim) Hoffman of Canby, MN, and their daughter Jana, and sons Ryan and Darin; Keith (Nancy) Hannasch of Monticello, MN, and their daughters Jennifer, Kristine, Ellie, and son Donald; Marilyn Hannasch of Harlingen, TX; and Glenn (Kimberly) Carlson of Dawson, MN, and their son Noah.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and James Carlson.
Everyone who knew Robert will remember him for his big smile, distinguished laugh, positive attitude, and love for life. Robert will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
