Rose Meyerhoff was small but mighty. From a tragic and traumatic childhood, she forged a joyful, diverse, and purposeful life.

Born in Belgium, Rose was orphaned at age nine when her family was murdered by the Nazis. A family friend saved her and took her to a convent where she was hidden by nuns. After liberation she was brought to New York City by an uncle at age fourteen.

Rose was abandoned by her aunt and uncle, leaving her to fend for herself at sixteen. With remarkable resilience, she worked, finished school, made friends, enjoyed the culture of the city, and fell in love. When Rose met Peter Meyerhoff, she described it as a bolt of lightning, and six months later they were married.

It was a good match. They were both Jewish immigrants, Holocaust survivors, and shared similar values and interests. They had their first two children, June and Karen, then moved to Minneapolis, where their son, Eric, was born.

Deeply moved by the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Rose and Pete turned their grief into action by founding the "Buy Black Campaign." The mission was to foster Black economic progress by encouraging the general public to patronize Black-owned businesses. It became an extremely successful nonprofit, recognized across the country.

Rose displayed unwavering generosity. She volunteered extensively throughout her life and worked outside the home after her son started school. She and Pete were adventurous travelers, crossing the globe to climb the Mayan pyramids, and boat down the Yangtze River. Rose was never idle. She cooked and baked, exercised and danced, knit and sewed, was an avid reader, and never went a day without doing a crossword. While she will be remembered for her wonderful storytelling, nothing was more important to her than her family.

Rose and Pete lived a full, happy life together, eventually moving to Montevideo in 2017 to be near June for their remaining years.

Rose is survived by her children, June, Karen, and Eric Meyerhoff; her grandchildren, Tarike and Kaleab Meyerhoff, and Jitla and Angela Arner-Meyerhoff; and her great-grandchildren, Robyn and Liv Turnquest.
