Sandy grew up as Sandra Lorraine Bogan in Montevideo, Minnesota with her mom and dad Gerald and Ilene Bogan and her brothers Loren, Wally, Jimmy and her sister Judy. When she was little, she would say when she grew up she wanted to be a nun but the Lord had a different plan for her. She found a different calling in nursing that would spark a life long desire to serve and take care of others.
The family moved many, many times for Gerald’s carpentry work, from Montevideo to the cities and back and even spent some time in North Dakota. While in the cities, Sandy attended nursing school. It was there she would notice a young man with jet black hair riding his bicycle back and forth each day trying to catch her eye. His name was Richard Earl Slowey and they would soon get married, settle in the cities and raise two children, Mike and Christine.
After 27 years of marriage in 1988, Sandy found herself a widow when Richard passed away unexpectedly. She worked hard to provide for her family as a single mom during this time working many hours as a CNA at Regency Manor nursing home. These were tough times but Sandy was tougher. She never let life knock her down for long.
And while some people are lucky to find love once in a lifetime, she was lucky to find a new love. She met and married Delmar “Ted” Edwards and spent the next 34 years building a life with him in the cities and finally settling in Montevideo again where she could continue to work as a care helper at Luther Haven nursing home. She never retired and she never stopped caring for others.
When she wasn’t taking care of others, she could be found hunting for the best deals at local thrift stores, garage sale’ing with her sister or testing her luck at the casino. She was also known to play a mean game of Buck Euchre where she could get a little competitive at times. She was fun and funny, loved others unconditionally and fiercely and was loved and adored in return.
Hers was a life of service, dedication, loyalty, laughter, joy and love. Her body was small but her presence was enormous. She touched many lives and will be missed greatly and remembered fondly with laughter and tears.
Our family would like to extend a special thank you to Sandy’s niece Brenda Wellnitz and close friend Cindy Stinson for their unconditional love and support through this very difficult time.
