Sharon Kay Haugen was born on March 14, 1936, to Roy and Dorothy (Sherburne) Fudge of rural Madison, MN. She grew up on the family farm with four sisters and a brother. Sharon graduated from Madison High School and Macalester College with a degree in education. The Fudges were members of the United Church of Christ in Madison, where Sharon met Robert Field, an intern pastor at the UCC. They were married on July 29, 1956. Four children were born to the union, three girls and one boy. The couple served congregations in Ellsworth, MN; Waubay, SD; Perham, MN; and Mountain Lake, MN. Robert passed away on March 13, 1976, while the family lived in Pipestone, MN. Sharon moved to Dawson, MN, where she owned and operated the Corner Coffee Shop in partnership with her best friend, Florence Gebur. Later, she worked at the Johnson Memorial Home in the Dietary Department. While in Dawson, she met Sidney Haugen, an employee of AGP, and they were married on November 23, 1979. She was an avid reader and enjoyed singing in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church in Dawson, where she was a member.
