Shirley Ann (Agre) Sachariason was born on June 24, 1931, in Wegdahl, Minnesota, the second child of Arthur and Florence (Milbeck) Agre. She was baptized on September 20, 1931, at Strombeck Lutheran Church in Wegdahl and confirmed on May 27, 1945, at Salem Lutheran Church in Montevideo . When she was in third grade the family moved to Montevideo where Shirley attended school. She graduated from Montevideo High School with the class of 1950.
Shirley was united in marriage to DeWayne Sachariason on April 21, 1951; the first couple to be married at the newly built Salem Lutheran Church in Montevideo. She moved to DeWayne’s home farm in Leenthrop Township, and they were the third generation to live and farm there. To this union three children were born—JoAnn in 1952, Paul in 1955, and Robert in 1963.
Shirley was the ultimate farm wife and homemaker. She worked alongside her husband as they raised cattle, hogs and chickens as well as growing corn and soybeans; and in 1974 grew their first crop of sugar beets. Shirley loved to bake delicious cakes, brownies, donuts and cookies and was well-known for her delicious potato salad that she served their frequent guests. Sundays were always for fried chicken--which Shirley put in the oven before church and the family enjoyed after. The couple moved into Montevideo in 1987. In October, 2017, Shirley was one of the many first residents of the new Brookside Senior Living facility in Montevideo. She was proud of her new home and enjoyed the home-cooked meals and the many activities they had to offer. Shirley has been a resident at Luther Haven Nursing Home since April 2023, and continued to keep busy with games, arts and crafts, even winning a purple ribbon for one of her paintings at the Chippewa County Fair in 2024!
Shirley was active at Saron Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and served in various roles in the Ladies Aide. She was a 4H leader of the Wegdahl Willing Workers while her children were involved, and she was in a homemaker’s club. She enjoyed bowling and belonged to several bowling leagues and a card club that she played in for many years.
Shirley and DeWayne loved to go camping, boating and fishing with their family and friends. They spent many summers at Lake Miltona. They took a trip to Hawaii with DeWayne’s sister and brother in law, Myra and Bert Scheltens, and took trips to Las Vegas with friends. Traveling in their motor home they visited many states including Colorado, Arizona, Florida as well as Canada. DeWayne passed away in 1989 but Shirley continued to camp at Lucky Acres on Lake Miltona for several years as she had many friends there. Shirley was able to take bus trips to Branson and the east coast with friends and took a trip to Ireland with her sister Ardis and nieces. She enjoyed casino trips, once winning a brand new pickup (which she traded in for a Mercury Marquis).
Shirley is survived by her daughter JoAnn (Douglas) Teichert, son Paul (Paula) Sachariason, daughter-in-law Jan Sachariason; grandchildren Stacy (Chris) Haugen, Amy (Ryan) Stewart, Tanya (Lee) Schroeder, Lauree (Dusty) Spletter, Ashley (Chris) Bauman, Ryan (Meggan) Sachariason, Jeff (Heidi) Sachariason, Tyler (Sami) Sachariason, and Jack Sachariason; great-grandchildren Taylor Olson, Wyatt Haugen, Brylee Haugen, Claire Stewart, Shayna Schroeder, Trey Teichert, MaKayla Spletter, Chloe Sachariason, Daisy Sachariason, Sophia Sachariason, Sawyer Sachariason, Wesley Sachariason and Wells Sachariason; and sisters Ardis Eekhoff and Beverly Linnee, her brother-in-law Lloyd Christians as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband DeWayne in 1989, her son Robert in 2021, her parents Arthur and Florence Agre, her father-in-law Edward E. and mother-in-law Josephine Sachariason; infant brother Melbourne, brother Marvin Agre, sister Lorraine Christians; brothers-in-law Peter Eekhoff and Roger Linnee and sister-in-law Grace Agre; and all of DeWayne’s siblings—Eldred Sachariason (Iva), Orton Sachariason (Verona), Myra (Bert) Scheltens, Sherl (Willard) McKinny, and Arlies (Grant) Christianson.
The family wishes to thank the devoted and caring staff at Luther Haven and Brookside Senior Living, and the wonderful staff at CCM Health and Centra Care Hospice. Blessed be her memory.
