Lillian Ostlie

Lillian Ostlie died Saturday, January 13, 2018, at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 91.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 2:00PM at Immanuel Lutheran Church rural Watson with Vicar Linda Estling officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018, from 5-7 PM at Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Lillian (Tricker) Ostlie was born in Clarkfield on April 4, 1926, to William and Madge (Quirk) Tricker. She grew up in the Clarkfield area. She attended and graduated from Clarkfield High School, where she was chosen as the homecoming queen. She attended teachers training in Montevideo and taught country school in the Montevideo area for a couple of years. She met Earl Ostlie and they were married on October 29, 1950, in Clarkfield. Earl and Lillian farmed in Chippewa County near Watson. They had five children together: Cynthia, Barbara, Donald, Bruce and Jon. Earl and Lillian moved from the farm into Montevideo in 1994. In 2015, Lillian moved to Luther Haven Nursing Home.

Lillian was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She participated in circle, ladies aid and was a Sunday school superintendent. Besides being a farm wife and raising five children, Lillian had a variety of interest and hobbies. Lillian was a 4-H member as a young girl and that involvement in 4-H would continue with her children as 4-H members. She enjoyed biking, reading, gardening, indoor plants, and crafting with pressed flowers and leaves. Lillian played 3rd base for a softball team in Watson during the summers. It was a family affair as her two daughters played on the same team with her. Family remembers Lillian’s love of nature. The family would go for picnics, nature walks or for drives to look for wildlife. Bowling was another hobby of Lillian’s and she continued to bowl until the age of 85.

Painting was a special passion of Lillian’s. She took classes in Marshall and painted pictures for family and friends to enjoy. She also painted Easter eggs for her grandchildren every Easter for 15 years. She was a member of the Montevideo Community Concert Association and loved music and theater. Earl and Lillian would take family trips together. In early years the family would enjoy camping trips in a tent and then with the motor home. Later, Earl and Lillian would go on their winter getaways to Hawaii and other warm destinations. They also had a cabin on Norway Lake and found it a very relaxing time for family and friends. In later years, Lillian would spend time working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Family was most important to Lillian. She loved to attend her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. Lillian would like nothing better than having the family together for holidays and special occasions.

Lillian is survived by her children: Barbara (Jerry) Popp, Willmar, MN, Donald (Diane) Ostlie, Montevideo, Bruce (Teresa) Ostlie, Watson and Jon (Sharon) Ostlie, Watson; eleven grandchildren: Brooke (Robert) Winberg, Cole (Melissa Meier) Pritchard, Grant (Jennifer) Popp, Kristy (JMatt Keil) Popp, Mark (Amanda) Popp, Nathan (Mariah) Ostlie, Tracy (Nate) Crowley, Beth Ostlie, Stina Ostlie, Mason Ostlie and Mike Molnar: seven great-grandchildren: Robbie and Thor Winberg, Miles and Zoe Popp, Emmett Keil and Noah and Jack Crowley; two sisters: Ruth Thompson, Montevideo and Betty Steinman, Clarkfield; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Lee, Dawson as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl; a daughter, Cynthia Pritchard, grandson, Brennon Johnson; sisters Anita (Malcolm) McLean, Dorothy (George) Phalen, and brother-in-laws: Bill Steinman and Duane Thompson as well as extended family and friends.
